Environment and Sustainability
It’s irrefutable that environmental health has been a crucial concern worldwide. A 2012 report estimated that 12.6 million people’s deaths were brought upon by an unhealthy environment, amassing to one fourth of the total global deaths (World Health Organization, 2017). Moreover, risk factors such as climate change, ultraviolet radiation, water and soil pollution, contribute to more than one hundred injuries and diseases (World Health Organization, 2017). Improvements in this field would stem from more awareness and practical policies. The American government has instead sparked the outrage of many on the international scale with their decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, which involves each participating nation’s report on their contributions to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. This notion strongly challenges the progress made in upholding a healthy environment. With climate change comes a rising frequency of tornadoes, typhoons and severe floods. Not to mention, patterns of the weather have gradually gone off-balance over the course of this past decade. These phenomena along with anti-nuclear movements, forest protection and air pollution have been tracking attention, demonstrating many people’s determination get involved. At this time, the support for sustainability is more prominent than ever.
During TASC, Environment and Sustainability delegates will look into various environmental problems through perspective angles of Taiwan and the US.
