American Secretary Summerfield, NC, United States Hello, my name is Pat Farrell. I am a senior at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in economics, Chinese language, and political science and minoring in philosophy, Asian studies, and French. I was born in New York and grew up in North Carolina. Academically, I am interested in economic development and the effects and causes of inequality. I spent a year studying economics in Chinese at Fudan University in Shanghai, and for a summer I interned at the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), the de facto American embassy in Taipei. At Pitt, I am involved in Americans for Informed Democracy, a student organization dedicated to raising awareness of social issues, both international and domestic.
My time in Taiwan working at AIT was my first introduction to Taiwan, but I didn't have much time to experience the culture and get outside of Taipei. I applied to TASC hoping to get a chance to see more of the island, and I got much more than I was expecting. TASC opened my eyes to the richness of the culture of Taiwan, a nation with far more diversity and complexity than its small size would lead you to believe. The connections I made with the delegates from both countries have stuck with me, and I hope that TASC 2015 will be just as enriching for each of our delegates as it was for me. |
