where  we're  headed

taiwan   [台灣]

Taiwan is a subtropical island nation roughly the size Maryland, located east of China and south of Japan.  See what CNN thinks are 10 Things Taiwan does Better than Anywhere Else! (Hint: Mock meat, healthcare, Chinese artifacts, and little league baseball are on that list!) But what really makes Taiwan unique is its 23 million people. Walking down a street in Taiwan, you may hear people talking in Mandarin, Southern Min, Hakka, and English, street vendors hawking Japanese "oden," TV commercials advertising Thai lessons, Taiwanese aboriginals breaking into song....  In fact, the first settlers arrived in Taiwan as early as 10,000 years ago! Of Austronesian descent, they're called the "Taiwanese aboriginals." Then from the 15th century to the present day came Dutch traders; Ming pirates; the Spanish, Canadian, and Scottish missionaries; waves of Han Chinese immigrants, Japanese imperialists; and finally, in 1949, Chinese refugees of Communism. Today, thousands of people continue to come to Taiwan in search of a better life, adding to the fusion of cultures that make Taiwan unique. We hope you'll experience this unique corner of Asia with us!

taipei   [台北]

From activists and political figures to business leaders, Taipei is the place to be.
Taking advantage of Taipei's role as the political and economic hub of Taiwan, TASC has invited the following influential speakers to meet with student delegates:
  • Dr. Stanton, the former director of AIT (American de facto embassy in Taiwan) and current director of the East Asia Center at National Tsing Hua University
  • An economic Foreign Service officer
  • A healthcare specialist to discuss Taiwan's world-class healthcare system
  • Key representatives from the LGBT community

taichung   [台中]

The plains of modern-day Taichung City used to be inhabited by Taiwanese aboriginals. Here, we will fully immerse in local Taiwanese culture and learn why, for hundreds of years, the West called Taiwan "Formosa," the Portuguese word for "beautiful." We will--
  • Visit the fabled beauty of Sun Moon Lake
  • Spend a day in a local Aboriginal Tribe Village
  • Discuss issues of education with local high school students
  • Tour the technology hub of Central Taiwan Science Park

tainan   [台南]

Tainan, the former capital and the oldest city in Taiwan, has more than a quarter of the nation's historical sites. It has also survived everything from disastrous typhoons to deadly floods.  Here, we will--
  • Tour the historic Anping District and speak with its locals
  • See the aftermath of Typhoon Morakot and its reconstruction efforts
  • Experience the Hakka Culture of Taiwan
  • Present as a Roundtable in a final forum in National Kaohsiung University

rest  assured -

You will not be resting assuredly!
Listed above are just some  of the events planned in our packed TASC itinerary. Jam packing all of Taiwan into two and a half weeks means a more-than-satisfying, well-rounded knowledge of Taiwan. Besides, where's the fun in revealing the fun? Those surprise night market visits and... I mean, the goal of TASC is for students to bond with and be inspired by each other—  to let the power of friendship and the confidence it instills propel each to achieve what they once believed to be impossible.

Bottom line: You're not only visiting the heart of Asia. You will find a home near and dear to your heart as well.
